Sexuality and sport is the last remaining social barrier to be conquered. Racism has mostly – but not completely- been combated.
Sexuality is somewhat taboo. How many openly gay athletes can you think of? How many are rugby players? In rugby terms, I can think of Gareth Thomas. In sport generally, I can add Steven Davies the England cricketer, Matthew Mitcham the Olympic Diver and Orlando Cruz the boxer. Statistically, there is certainly more than one homosexual in professional rugby.
But why does nobody come out? Are they scared of the public’s reaction?
In New Zealand, rumours are abounding of a gay All Black. These rumours have gathered such force purely because there is no totemic trailblazer. No present or former All Black has ever come-out.
